How many days of work can I demand under MGNREGA?

Every rural household is entitled to 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per year. You can demand work at any time by submitting a written application to your Gram Panchayat. Work must be provided within 15 days of your application.

What is the unemployment allowance?

If work is not provided within 15 days of your application, you are entitled to an unemployment allowance. The allowance is 25% of the wage rate for the first 30 days and 37.5% thereafter, paid by the state government.

How is MGNREGA wage calculated?

Wages are paid on a piece-rate basis or daily basis as per the state-level schedule of rates. The minimum wage is set by the central government and varies by state (₹250-₹350 per day in 2026). Equal wages for men and women are guaranteed.

Can I choose the type of work?

Yes, as far as possible, work should be provided within 5 km of your residence. If work is beyond 5 km, you get an additional 10% of the wage as travel allowance. Women are entitled to crèche facilities if there are at least 5 children under 6 years.
