Education loans for Bihar and West Bengal students: check banks, eligibility, documents, interest rates and the step-by-step application process.

Overview of Education Loans in Bihar and West Bengal 2026

Education loans help students in Bihar and West Bengal pay for tuition fees, hostel charges, books and other expenses of higher education, including courses in India and abroad. Banks such as SBI, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank and other public and private banks offer education loans in both states, with interest rates and terms published on their official portals. Both states have a strong network of bank branches and common service centres, which makes it easy to start the application process close to home.

In addition to regular bank loans, both state governments run dedicated schemes: the Bihar Student Credit Card for students of Bihar and the West Bengal Student Credit Card for students of West Bengal. These schemes offer loans at concessional rates with the state government as guarantor.

Types of Education Loans

  • Secured loans: Larger loans require collateral such as property or a fixed deposit.
  • Unsecured loans: Smaller loans are available without collateral, based on the co-applicant's income and credit profile.
  • State schemes: The Bihar Student Credit Card and West Bengal Student Credit Card are government-backed options with lower interest rates.
  • Co-applicant loans: Most banks require a parent or guardian to be the co-applicant for student loans.

Before choosing a loan, compare the interest rate, processing fee, moratorium and total cost across at least two or three banks.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The student must be an Indian citizen and a resident of Bihar or West Bengal, as applicable.
  • The student must have secured admission in a recognised institution in India or abroad.
  • The course should be a graduate, postgraduate, professional or skill-development course recognised by the bank.
  • A parent or guardian must be available as a co-applicant for most bank loans.

Individual banks may add their own conditions, so it is always better to confirm the exact eligibility on the bank's official website before applying.

Documents Required

  • Admission letter and fee structure from the institution.
  • Marksheets of Class 10, Class 12 and graduation, as applicable.
  • Identity and residence proof of the student and the co-applicant.
  • Income proof of the co-applicant, such as salary slips or income tax returns.
  • Bank statements of the last six months, if required.
  • Passport size photographs.

How to Apply for an Education Loan

  1. Compare education loan schemes on the official portals of banks such as SBI, PNB and Bank of India.
  2. Use the online education loan eligibility calculators on the bank portals to check your loan amount.
  3. Fill in the online application form on the bank's official website or visit the nearest branch.
  4. Upload or submit the required documents along with the application.
  5. The bank assesses the course, institution and repayment capacity, and sanctions the loan.
  6. Sign the loan agreement and the amount is disbursed, usually directly to the institution.

Interest Rates and Repayment

Interest rates on education loans vary from bank to bank and depend on the loan amount and the course. Smaller loans generally attract lower rates, while larger loans are priced higher; check the current rates on the official bank portals. Repayment starts after the course ends, with a moratorium period that covers the course duration plus a grace period, as per the bank's terms. Interest on education loans is also eligible for tax deduction under the Income Tax Act, and banks charge only a nominal processing fee on sanction.

Students from SC, ST and other eligible communities can apply for scholarship support such as the Post Matric Scholarship in addition to an education loan.
