Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a landmark social security scheme launched in 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development. The scheme guarantees 100 days of wage employment per year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work. It is one of the largest work guarantee programs in the world.
Key Features
Employment is provided within 15 days of application. If employment is not provided, unemployment allowance must be paid. Wages are paid as per the minimum wage rate fixed by the central government, with different rates for different states. At least one-third of workers must be women.
All rural households are eligible. Adult members (18+ years) who are willing to do unskilled manual work can apply. Both men and women are eligible. No minimum education requirement.
100 days guaranteed employment per household per year. Wages paid weekly through DBT. Works include water conservation, drought proofing, flood control, rural connectivity and land development. Worksite facilities include drinking water, shade and first aid.
