Sabooj Sathi WB: Empowering Students with Free Cycles

Sabooj Sathi is a popular scheme of the Government of West Bengal launched in 2015 by the Department of School Education. The scheme provides free bicycles to students studying in Classes IX to XII in government, government-aided and sponsored schools across the state. The primary objective is to reduce dropout rates among students, especially girls, by making it easier for them to commute to school. The scheme has been widely appreciated for its positive impact on education in rural areas.

Students studying in Classes IX, X, XI and XII in government and government-aided schools of West Bengal are eligible. Both boys and girls can apply. Students must have regular attendance of at least 75% to qualify. The scheme covers all districts of West Bengal including rural and urban areas. Students from economically weaker sections are given priority.

Eligible students receive a brand new bicycle free of cost. The bicycles are distributed through schools in a ceremonial manner. The scheme has distributed millions of bicycles since its inception and has significantly contributed to reducing the gender gap in education by making it safer and easier for girls to travel to school.

The scheme is implemented through schools. Students need to submit their application to the school headmaster or principal. The school compiles the list of eligible students and submits it to the district education office. Bicycles are distributed at the school level after approval from the education department.
